Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in SVS Institute of Dental Sciences was established in the year 2003, with Postgraduate program starting in 2009.The department faculty include a stalwart in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery and other eminent faculty members who bring a wealth of experience and unique skill sets to its repertoire.

The department performs a wide spectrum of procedures ranging from minor oral surgery to major head and neck reconstruction. Minor oral surgical procedures which include extractions, third molar surgeries, biopsies, treatment for maxillofacial infections, implantology etc are performed on Out patient basis. Major surgeries includes Maxillofacial trauma, Maxillofacial pathology, Orthognathic surgeries, TMJ surgery, Salivary gland diseases, Cleft lip and palate surgeries, Head and neck oncology etc.

The department is spread over a large area with separate sections for exodontia, Postgraduate section and minor operation area.The department trains students at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in both theoretical and surgical aspects and help them in honing their skills. Department actively conducts the academic activities to engage the students in patient oriented clinical programs. Being a part of the SVS group of institutions, our department has an advantage of utilizing medical hospital facilities like modular Operation theatres, ICU, separate wards for male and female patients. Advanced diagnostic aids like CT and 1.5 Tesla MRI. Casualty or Emergency duties for post graduates provides comprehensive training in handling the maxillofacial emergency cases and interaction with allied specialities. Students have access to a vast collection of books and articles in both medical college and dental college library. Students can also undertake research projects in the state of art research facilities available at Palamuru biosciences which is a sister institution belonging to the same educational society.

One of the few Maxillofacial units doing microvascular reconstruction of Head and Neck defects in the country and is the only unit where transoral condylar surgeries have been performed. On an average, the unit performs free surgeries for a minimum of 150-200 patients every year  under Aarogyasri scheme.
